A recent article in the industry journal Desalination & Water Reuse (D&WR) had a title that caught my eye: “Cambria Desalination will Bring Environmental Benefit”.  I encourage you to read the article, since it is written from a completely different perspective. It explains the plant will provide 1600 m³/d. I did a few calculations and conversions to translate that to units that we hear more often. 1600 m³/d would be  473.45 acre feet per year.  (This calculation assumes 365 days of full production.) In 2008, the CCSD produced just under 708 acre-feet, which is equal to 2,392.62  m³/d.   Of course, we’ve often heard that we would only be using the plant for about half the year.  (See links at the end of this post for conversion tools and CCSD well production for the last 20 years.)

D&WR,  published with the cooperation of The International Desalination Association, has been serving the world’s growing need for water since 1991. Fast emerging technologies are now making desalination a viable proposition not only for the arid areas of the world, but for places not usually associated with water shortages. D&WR covers the engineering aspects of desalination and water reuse from municipal water supplies through to industrial needs. It delivers practical information and news on projects, materials and equipment and research with sections devoted to the International Desalination Association and IDA affiliates, worldwide. D&WR also publishes an annual Desalination Sources Directory which lists, comprehensively, details of suppliers of equipment, products and services for the desalination industry.

Editorial topics include:
Environmental aspects of desalination and water reuse
Seawater and brackish water desalination
Thermal and membrane processes
Advanced wastewater treatment for reuse
Site project reports
Pretreatment for thermal and membranes
Designing intakes and outfalls
Manufacturer’s equipment case studies
Research and development
Operation of desalination and reuse plants
Maintenance and upgrading of plants
Technology updates
Energy use and recovery
Education and training
News about IDA and affiliates
Conference listings and reports
