Cambrian Tina Dickason presented 2,496 letters of protest at last night’s CCSD hearing on the rate increase. Although the total number of ratepayers hasn’t been confirmed by the CCSD, last fall they claimed 2,001 protests would be more than 50%. Today, the some representatives from League of Women Voters are counting and verifying the protest letters in Suite 204 over at the CCSD office building – probably with and audience of at least a few members of the community and Kathy Choate, district clerk looking on.
The hearing went fairly smoothly, with a number of speakers urging support of the current Board and many others enumerating their reasons for disagreeing with the current status quo. The Vet’s Hall was standing room only and, other than periodic outbursts of applause, quiet and respectful. The Board was subdued, occasionally speaking up in defense of their policies or correcting something said.
The meeting was over by 7:30pm, adjourned after the Board set July 21, 5:30 at the CCSD offices for the meeting to accept the final validated count of the protest letters. (The Vet’s Hall is booked for that date.)
The question that remains is: if the protest is successful, what should the CCSD do? How does the community move forward constructively? I have some ideas, but I really want to know what YOU think.
